User Interface

The main window combines a folder browser, file list, image preview, and EXIF panel. Almost every function is available from the menu bar or toolbar.

The main menu contains five sub-menus:

File menu

  1. Save image as… - Save a new or edited image. Choose folder, filename, and format (JPG, PNG, BMP, TIF, etc.). For JPG, the Image Saving Options dialog lets you set quality and preview the result before saving.
  2. Save EXIF and IPTC tags… - Export metadata from the current image to a text or HTML file. See EXIF & IPTC.
  3. Properties - View Windows file properties for the selected image.
  4. Explorer - Open the current folder in Windows File Explorer.
  5. Copy… - Copy the image to another folder.
  6. Open with - Open the image in another application (Photoshop, Paint, etc.).
  7. Delete - Delete the selected photo.
  8. Exit - Close the application.

View menu

  1. Large icons, Small icons, List, Details, Thumbnails - Change how files appear in the file pane.
  2. Folders, Files, EXIF, Image - Show or hide window panes by choosing a preset layout.
  3. Full-screen - Toggle full-screen mode (same as pressing Enter).

Image menu

  1. Turn left / Turn right - Rotate the photo 90° (L / R in full-screen).
  2. Zoom-in, Zoom-out, 100% - Scale the preview or view at actual pixels.
  3. Enhance Contrast, Colors, Gamma… - Adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, and color channels. See Editing Images.
  4. Resize - Change image dimensions (Ctrl+R).
  5. Paste - Insert an image from the clipboard (Ctrl+V).
  6. Slideshow - Start automatic playback (S). Configure interval in Settings.

Service menu

  1. Search by EXIF - Disabled in Free Photo Viewer. For EXIF-based photo search, use the separate EXIF Search product.
  2. Settings - Open the program settings dialog.
  3. Language - Switch the interface language. Free Photo Viewer ships with multiple UI languages so you can work in your preferred language without reinstalling.

Help menu

  1. Help - Opens the built-in help (this online guide is the updated version).
  2. Tip of the day - Shows rotating usage tips. See also Tips.
  3. About - Program version and copyright information.

Window panes and toolbar

Toolbar - Quick access to common actions: navigation, full-screen, slideshow, settings, and more.

Folders and files - The folder tree on the left drives the file list. Selecting a folder populates the upper-right pane with thumbnails or icons.

Current image - Click a file to display it in the image pane at the bottom of the window.

EXIF tags - When present, shooting parameters appear beside the image. Press E in full-screen to toggle on-screen EXIF subtitles.

Status bar - The bottom line shows image resolution and the current zoom scale.
